From Nitrate to Nitric Oxide: The Role of Salivary Glands and Oral Bacteria
Nitrate bacteria within the mouth seeds the nitrogen cycle within the stomach affecting the amount of NO within the blood.
The salivary glands and oral bacteria play an essential role in the conversion process from nitrate (NO3-) and nitrite (NO2-) to nitric oxide (NO) in the human body. NO is, at present, recognized as a multifarious messenger molecule with important vascular and metabolic functions. Besides the endogenous L-arginine pathway, which is catalyzed by complex NO synthases, nitrate in food contributes to the main extrinsic generation of NO through a series of sequential steps (NO3--NO2--NO pathway). Up to 25% of nitrate in circulation is actively taken up by the salivary glands, and as a result, its concentration in saliva can increase 10- to 20-fold.

Mouth wash does more harm than good
Antiseptic mouthwash use abrogates oral bacterial conversion of nitrate to nitrite. ► Interruption of the enterosalivary circulation reduces plasma nitrite levels. ► The reduction in plasma nitrite levels is associated with elevations in blood pressure. ► The results indicate the importance of oral nitrate-reducing bacteria in blood pressure control. ► Our findings intimate adverse effects of mouthwash by disturbing NO/nitrite homeostasis.

Note:
For most people, taking nitric oxide supplements does not cause side effects. When side effects do occur, they are often mild and may include:
However, some people should not take the supplements because of the risk of potential side effects. These include people with:
Cirrhosis: People with cirrhosis, or liver scarring, should take nitric oxide cautiously as it could worsen liver function.
Guanidinoacetate methyltransferase deficiency: This is a rare genetic conditionwhere a person lacks an enzyme that converts arginine into creatine, which is a waste product. As a result, people with this deficiency should not take nitric oxide supplements.
Low blood pressure: If a person already has low blood pressure, they should not take nitric oxide supplements due to the risk that it might lower blood pressure further. Doctors will recommend that anyone taking nitric oxide supplements stops doing so before undergoing surgery.
Doctors also have some concerns that taking nitric oxide supplements could make some conditions worse. These include kidney disease, herpes, and after a person has had a heart attack.
A study published in 2006 in JAMATrusted Source found that people taking L-arginine after a heart attack had a higher chance of death, experiencing a repeat heart attack, and being hospitalized than people who did not.
This article does not give a comprehensive list of potential conditions where a person should not take nitric oxide supplements.
The supplements may also interfere with medications, such as those for diabetes and high blood pressure. Anyone thinking about taking nitric oxide supplements should talk to their doctor first to ensure they will not interfere with existing conditions or any other medications they are taking.
Yeah, but it's like all of mother nature's complexity, that we insist on using reductive thinking in our attempt to understand exactly what's happening.
NO is part of the bodies emergency situation sensors. It's a messenger molecule sure, but it's also quite damaging to tissue. You want your emergency messengers working but you don't want them switching on more than necessary.😉
